In our blogs and past YouTube videos, we have recommended the use of a Dash Cam to aid the RV traveler if an unfortunate traffic event occurs and video documentation is needed. We have used a Dash Cam from day one of our RV travels. It was time for an upgrade needing new features and we found the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 to be a perfect Dash Cam for RV travel.
Why a Dash Cam is Important
Traveling today’s roads offers a number of challenges. These challenges can be amplified when adding an RV to the equation. It doesn’t matter what type of RV is used, they are long and heavy, and the result of this additional weight requires more distance to stop regardless of speed traveled.
For those of us who enjoy the RV lifestyle we all can share the countless times we’ve maintained a safe distance from the vehicle in front of us only to have someone quickly cut in front causing a near collision or worse, rear-ending the aggressive driver for their thoughtless actions. Without a Dash Cam, it’s between the drivers of each vehicle to state what caused an accident. With a good quality Dash Cam, a traffic event can be shared with those investigating the accident as well as the insurance company showing the unavoidable occurring due to the actions taken by an aggressive driver.
That’s the reason we want to have a good quality Dash Cam in use in our RV tow vehicle. With the frequency of occurrence, it’s that uncaring, aggressive driver that causes the most concern. If a safe gap is maintained and then someone quickly pulls in front and hits the breaks, the unavoidable happens – a rear end collision. The one hit will say: “They were following to close.” and the RV traveler will state: “They cut me off in traffic preventing me from stopping in time.” It’s a “he said, they said” situation. The VIOFO A119 Mini 2 is a perfect Dash Cam for RV travel. Its small size takes very little window real estate. There are multiple options to power the Dash Cam making the installation easy. But it’s the range of features we needed as to why we selected this Dash Cam.
The Dash Cam has the newest STARVIS 2 image sensor, delivering image quality with outstanding dynamic range. The A119 Mini 2 supports 2K recording at 60fps, capturing details such as road signs and number plates.
The mini design makes it easy to hide behind or next to the rear-view mirror. The installation minimizes obstructing your sight and is barely noticeable from outside of the vehicle.
With its voice control feature, the A119 Mini 2 allows you to start/stop recording, take photos, and turn on/off WiFi by giving simple voice commands. We didn’t need to lift a finger to use the Dash Cam allowing us to keep our eyes on the road and our hands on the wheel.
A built-in 5GHz Wi-Fi connection module is built into A119 Mini 2 proving smooth video previewing, downloading, and sharing. The 5GHz Wi-Fi increases the speed for file transfer via the VIOFO app which is very important when the need arises to share a video file.

Installing the VIOFO A119 Mini 2
We were provided two options to install the Dash Cam. The first is the simplest. Just peel the supplied 3M VHB backing of the unit, apply to the windshield, plug in the 12V cigarette adapter and in 5 minutes the camera is online and recording.
For our evaluation, VIOFO provided the bundle containing the VIOFO A119 Mini 2, 256GB Card, polarizing lens filter, Hardwired Kit and Bluetooth Remote. We chose the second option for our installation. Using the hardwired kit we were able to hide the power wiring and turn the unit off and on with the ignition key. Using the hardwired kit took us 45 minutes, but the first time installer may want to add another hour for the learning curve. See the video below for where we show the installation.
Overall Impressions of the VIOFO A119 Mini 2
At the time of this blog, we have been using the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 Dash Cam daily for over a month. We like the small form factor minimizing windshield real estate.
