RV Computer Desk – Custom RV Workspace
Why do we need an RV computer desk?
We have been traveling in our 5th wheel for the last 6 years, many times for 3 months stents. Having weekly client work, I need a space dedicated to the graphic and video editing work associated with Internet marketing as well as the needs for iLoveRVlife. We converted our dinette space into a work area. We’ve made it work, but hasn’t been the most effect use of space.
The problems stem from the lack of storage for keyboard, mouse, backup hard drives, camera batteries and other small electronics. Our small tower PC used for graphic and video editing tasks is stuck in a corner of a slide out and we make an effort to strap it to the floor, but it still moves around on bumpy roads. Lastly, the existing dinette table takes up to much space and cramps the sitting area adjacent to the table. It’s time to make a change.
Building the new RV computer desk.
We removed the existing table and retained the mounting bracket securing the new desk to the wall. We also made better use of space by eliminating the large gaps between the side wall and the distance where the monitors extended beyond the width of the desk. This gain in space gave us an extra foot of living space next to our recliners.
We built the desk out of cabinet grade birch plywood. This is expensive at over $60 a sheet. We created a cut sheet to maximize our cuts and eliminate waster. You can down load our sheet here – PROJECT CUT SHEET. It’s easy to work with, provides a very sturdy work surface, and the birch stains well. We stained to match the existing wood work found in the 5th wheel and gave the desk a couple coats of polyurethane for protection. We go into greater detail showing highlights of the construction as well as the storage features in the video below.
The results.
With the new RV computer desk, we now have a well-proportioned RV workspace and an abundance of storage for the ever growing pile of electronics. And the savings in space now rids the constant bumping into monitors with the recliners and scraping our legs when we need to access the living space with the slides in. We couldn’t be happier with the results.
