Rocky Top Campground – Blountville TN
We were looking for a cooler climate to test our new Montana 5th wheel. Joan was also hoping for a little snow late in the winter season so we headed for northeastern Tennessee in mid-February. We found Rocky Top Campground located in the small community of Blountville, just minutes between Bristol and Kingsport. For our two week stay, the campground was perfect with a large pull-through and full hook-ups.
Rocky Top Campground
This was our first time in a campground specifically for ages 18 years old and older. The campground is located a few minutes off I-81 at exit 63, with the campsites resting on a gentle hill side. Our first impression was how well the grounds were maintained and the uncluttered surroundings around each RV, even for these cold winter months.
The campground is paved and each site was level and looked to be newly graveled. The sites have 30/50 amp power, water, sewer and cable. Wi-Fi is also available. Propane sales are located in the campground with easy access for bottles as well as those onboard tanks. The office sells basic camping needs along with firewood and some grocery items. We found the staff and those staying in the campground to be friendly and helpful. We were able to get reasonable cell signals for AT&T and Verizon for voice and data at speeds that allowed me to slip in a few days of work.
Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City / Tri-Cities Area
The weather varied over our two week stay with several mornings in the teens only to shift a few days later with afternoon temperatures in the mid-sixties. We even experienced a little snow, painting the trees and hills making the trip extra special for Joan.
Even in the winter months, there was plenty to see during our two week stay at Rocky Top Campground. The campground is about 4 miles from Kingsport. We were able to find good restaurants, grocery stores, a Walmart as well as other support business and medical if needed.
Bristol is a 10 minute drive north on I-81. While in the area, we visited the Birth Place of Country Music Museum, toured Bristol Caverns, stopped at the Bristol Motor Speedway, and ate at a few favorite restaurants.
With the Bristol Motor Speedway just a few miles north, that area is known for the many short term camping locations with no hook-ups. What a treat to find Rocky Top Campground in a great location, with pretty surroundings, and a great staff.
