Phone Dashboard Mount

by | Sep 3, 2022

After 8 years of heavy RV travel, we have acquired a number of items that we use in our Ford F-350 to manage our travel. We have multiple cell phones, TPMS, and cameras that have grown and now clutter our truck dash and windshield. It had become unmanageable causing viewing issues and with the hot weather, the suction cups holding the devices constantly release and drop electronics in the floorboard. It was time to come up with a phone dashboard mount solution to better secure the devices and improve viewing from the front windshield.

Phone Dashboard Mount

phone dashboard mount productsWhen we started our search for a phone dashboard mount solution, we discovered this could be a very costly project. We needed a:

  • Dashboard mount that would provide a solid base to hold the various devices.
  • Industry standard system accepting the various mounts for a wide range of electronics.
  • System that had to be metal. With the hot summer sun reaching over 130 degrees, we were concerned plastic or polymer products would fail over time.
  • Price point in products that wouldn’t put the project outside our budget.

After our search, we found a number of products supporting the 20mm ball mount. Our search discovered two ball mount systems – 20mm and one inch. The products created for these two mount configurations are not compatible and it was important to choose one and design our solutions around the various 20mm mounts.

We used the following for our project.

Fast Trac Phone and Tablet Dashboard Mount Bracket (Compatible with 2015-2020 Ford F150 & Raptor | 2017-2021 F-250 -550 | 2018-2021 Expedition) This was the most difficult items to source for our 2014 F-350 due to the age of our truck. Cost was an issues too with solutions from other manufacturers that put the project outside our budget.

TACKFORM Dual Socket Telescoping Arm for 20mm Balls | 7.5-9.25″ Long – The arm is all metal construction and gave us the ability to make minor adjustments in length to fit our viewing options.

TACKFORM Aluminum AMPS Pattern Drill Base with 20mm Ball Mount – This mount fits the arms we selected and the standard hole patterns for the dash mount we choose.

Bulletpoint Dash Mount Cell Phone Holder – This was one of the more expensive items when compared to the number of 20mm phone holders offered on Amazon. We choose this holder due to aluminum construction and its 3 rubberized grips on the inner surface providing a secure grip.

Installing the Phone Dashboard Mount

installing phone dashboard mountInstalling was very simple and took less than an hour. All products fit as designed and the mounts are very substantial. The Fast Trac Phone and Tablet Dashboard Mount Bracket was for a 2017-2021 F-250 550, but measuring our 2014 F350 we found the mount to be a good fit. The mount came with 3M tape and we added a short screw at each corner for added measure.

Adding the 20mm ball mounts, arms and phone holder took minutes and were perfect for phones. There is ample adjustment for height, length of dash, and support both portrait or landscape viewing options.

The only challenge was what to add to the center mount position. We tried the TMPS monitor, but a reasonable mounting solutions couldn’t be found. The GoPro camera would have been to high. We ended up mounting our dash camera created a simple mount using a custom bracket made from two pieces of aluminum angle, drilling holes to match the mount and camera, and a little black paint. In the video below, you see what can be done after using a simple drill and hacksaw giving the mount a factory look.

The project was a success. Easy to install and used an industry standard that will support future modifications and additions as needed, and all were a quality product. And equally important, the items used fit our budget.
