Elkin NC – Trails, Spooky Forest, Creeks, Waterfalls and Vineyards of Course
Stony Knoll, Adagio and Jones Von Drehle Vineyards
We took a day and tried several vineyards that were a little further from the campground as well as a tasting room five minutes away. Visiting many of these vineyards for the first time, we had no idea if we would have nice views or if we will enjoy the wines. For Joan and I, that’s part of the adventure.
Our first stop was Stony Knoll Vineyards and was slightly under a 30 minute trip from the campground. The winery was on a hill surrounded by a beautiful vineyard and an outdoor patio perfect for our wine flight and a tray of cheeses and summer sausage that we brought for lunch. The wines were excellent and we enjoyed the time to chat and soak up a little nature with the views and cool temperatures.
Out second stop was Adagio Vineyards. Again we were limited to wine flights, but the tasting room allowed us to stay indoors at the wine bar. A great host served and explained each sample adding to the experience. We bought a bottle of our favorite wine from the flights and went outside to a patio area on the edge of property. More conversation, good wine and views of the changing fall colors.
Out last stop was Jones Von Drehle Vineyards – a second trip for Joan and me to this excellent winery. This was a great stop to end the day, sitting atop the hill and overlooking the vineyards in the valley. Fantastic wines, great company and pretty views made a great ending for the day.
Carter Falls, Hiking Trails, Spooky Forest and Grassy Creek Vineyard
Out last day out was a mixture of hiking and waterfalls along with a bonus stop at Grassy Creek Vineyards at the end of the trail. We had experienced a substantial amount of rain over the past few days and the Carter Falls put on an excellent display. The sounds of the falls were booming along with full water flows rushing along the rocks.
Backtracking from the waterfall trail, we returned to the campground to tackle the Grassy Creek trail. The first views took us through a white pine forest where the local trail keeps had decorated for Halloween. Continuing, trail took us through the edge of farm land, on to Grassy Creek and continued toward the vineyard. Reaching Grassy Creek Vineyard, Joel and I treated ourselves to a wine flight before we continued our hike and returning to the campground.
A Perfect Ending for Elkin, NC
The last couple of days were a perfect ending. Great vineyards, the draw of the great folks who live and visit the area mixed with a final hike along with the fall leaves and rushing waterfalls. What a great trip.
