We have been looking for a solution allowing us to use low wattage power devices when we travel long distances. There are times when we travel 800 to 1,000 mile stretches and may not have the opportunity of an overnight campground with power connections. The result, a boondock at Walmart, truck stop or other location that will allow us to park our 5th wheel and truck. While the overnight parking isn’t that big of a challenge, we don’t have solar or a large battery bank and that limits powering some of our 120V AC devices such a TV, our MoFi 4500 cellular router or a fan.
We have four 6V golf cart batteries, but the bank is dedicated to our residential refrigerator and will last around 60 hours. We don’t want to run the risk of exhausting the batteries with two or three days of use until we can reach a campground with power connections. Fortunately, we found a cost effective solution using the BigBlue Cellpowa500 Portable Solar Generator and SOLARPOWA100 Folding Solar Panel.
BigBlue Cellpowa500 Portable Solar Generator
The BigBlue Cellpowa500 power station is a self-contained system that includes efficient LiFePO4 batteries, a BMS controller that prevents short-circuits, overcharging, undercharging, and overheating protection, a 500W pure sine wave inverter (peak 1000W) and a MPPT solar charge controller.
The power station uses LiFePO4 batteries which offers a 2000+ cycle life and more than 10 years of battery life. There are three options for charging:
- The supplied 120V AC to 24V DC power brick.
- The supplied 12V cigarette lighter adapter and cable.
- Using the Cellpowa500 built in MPPT solar charger and the portable SOLARPOWA100 solar panel.
The Cellpowa500 is a 537.6Wh solar generator and equipped with two 18w USB-A supporting fast charge connections, 2 pure sine wave AC outlets (peak 1000W) and two 12V DC ouputs.
The high quality LCD display shows remaining battery life, input/output wattage, failure warning indicator, temperature protection indicator, remaining capacity, and remain power time in hours.
Below is a handy graphic showing the powering capabilities of the BigBlue Cellpowa500 Portable Solar Generator.
BigBlue SOLARPOWA100 Folding Solar Panel
The SOLARPOWA 100 solar panel has 24V/4.16A maximum output charging power is specially designed for the BigBlue Cellpowa 500 portable power station. The DC output of this panel is more stable than other solar panels and provides improved charge times for Cellpowa 500. The solar panel is a waterproof and self-cleaning ETFE material and is simple to carry and set up.
We found the BigBlue Cellpowa500 Portable Solar Generator and SOLARPOWA100 Folding Solar Panel to be perfect solutions for our boondocking needs. Lightweight, easy to operate, 3 options for charging and all at a great price per watt.
